Waterford, CT (May 22, 2013) – Waterford Speedbowl beat Mother Nature and a thickening mist and dampness to record another round of its Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday racing series. Scoring victories on the program included Giovanni Giarratana of Newington in the Legend Cars feature, Randy Johnston of Westerly, RI in the X-Car race and Jon Porter of Canterbury in the Super X-Car event. Pawcatuck’s Jacob Perry bested the field in the Bandolero division and Peter Pollard mastered the Wacky Race on the night.

Giarrantana was opportunistic in the 20-lap Legend Cars race. He made his way through the field from the 14th starting position while first year drivers T.J. Thompson and Michael Christopher Jr. battled out front. Thompson took the race lead on lap-1 while Christopher rocketed into second position. Thompson led Christopher by one car length before the second generation driver found room to his inside down the front chute on lap-8. Christopher drove past Thompson through turns one and two and was the new leader on lap-9.

Giarratana, meanwhile, steadily rose through the pack. He was among the top-ten by lap-4 and up to sixth position when the field completed lap-9. Before the next circuit was complete, the first caution flag waved when Angelo Belsito caught the backstretch wall and slowed to a stop in turn three with damage to the right front of his machine.

The restart pitted Christopher against veteran racer Carl Blandina. Christopher got a great jump to resume his lead but hot on his tail were Nicholas Sowa and Giarratana. Only one more lap was completed when first-year driver Josh Zentek spun between turns three and four to return the race to caution on lap-10.

The next restart was key as Giarratana was outside of Christopher on the front row. He was up to the task, challenging Christopher from the drop of the green flag. He raced into the lead and trucked out ahead of Christopher as Sowa pressed for second. Sowa moved inside and took the spot on lap-12 in advance of the final caution flag on lap-14 as Jordan Churchill spun in turn two.

Giarratana got away from Sowa on the restart, steadily opening up his lead to several car lengths through the checkered flag. Sowa held down second while Christopher had a strong showing to place third.

Johnston came out on top in a thrilling 20-lap X-Car feature over a large field of cars. He was the third leader of the race, taking over from Scott Limkemann. The race saw Onie Pierce out to the early advantage as most of the field battled two and three wide before Jeff Dombrowski spun out of mid-pack and came to rest against the turn three wall to draw the yellow flag on lap-2.

The field couldn’t get sorted out following the restart as a three-car accident happened shortly after racing resumed involving Melissa Clavette, Wayne Shifflett and Aaron Piper-Sypher. Limkemann lept into the lead following the next restart, taking over command on lap-3. He bolstered his lead while behind him, Johnston positioned himself second ahead of a battle for third between Mitch Bombard and Michael Marvin.

Johnston closed in and stalked Limkemann just after they raced past halfway on lap-10. Limkemann held the top groove, keeping his momentum by running the high line. Johnston tucked low and pulled underneath in a battle for the lead. The two waged a memorable side-by-side duel as Bombard and Marvin inched in to make it a four-car battle up front.

Limkemann held on to the lead with Johnston to his inside through lap-15 before Johnston was finally able to get his nose ahead to be scored as the leader on lap-16. Although Johnston held the lead he was not able to shake Limkemann from his outside. Bombard momentarily took a peek at a three-wide move headed into turn one on lap-17 before thinking better and ducking back in line behind the top two.

Johnston was able to finally clear Limkemann the next lap to gain some breathing room. He had to successfully clear lapped traffic over the remaining circuits before claiming the narrow victory. Bombard was able to get past Limkemann’s inside in the final two laps to take second, with Limkemann hanging on to third.

Perry led the duration of the caution-free 20-lap INEX Bandolero feature. He sprinted out to a several car length lead ahead of a tight battle for second position. Once A.J. Eastman took that spot, the second through fourth place cars lined up to cut into Perry’s lead. They reached his rear bumper with two laps remaining however Perry was able to prevail for his first win of the season.

The 20-lap Super X-Car race was dominated by Porter once he made his way to the front. He took command in the outside lane on lap-5, getting around early leader Jim Boyle. Porter’s big lead was erased by a lap-17 caution flag when Ken Downing III spun in turn three. Porter got away from Eric Finkbein Jr. on the restart to cruise to his second Wednesday win in three weeks. Finkbein finished second while last week’s winner Mike Maskell placed third.

Waterford, CT (May 18, 2013) – Waterford Speedbowl hosted Scout Night Saturday evening celebrating two American traditions, scouting and racing. The crowd on hand was treated to a five-division NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program. Scoring victories on the night included Kyle James of Ashaway, RI in the SK Modifieds® and Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton in the Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Models. A pair of defending champions earned their first 2013 wins, Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon and Paul French of Andover in the Mini Stocks and SK Light Modifieds, respectively. Ryan Waterman of Danielson was a first-ever winner in the Street Stock feature. All five were first time winners in 2013.

James picked up his win surviving a wild 35-lap race in the SK Modified® division. James, who started in last position, dodged incidents which resulted in eight caution flags that plagued the race. He started the race in 23rd position after power steering problems sidelined him in practice and qualifying.

The race began with rookie Tyler Jackson and Ed Puleo battling for the lead from their front row starting positions. Jackson bobbled exiting turn two on lap-2 creating a traffic jam behind him which resulted in a caution for Diego Monahan, who spun into turn-3. Puleo took the lead on the restart as Jeff Rocco and Tom Abele climbed to second and third on the track.

Nichole Morgillo and Justin Gaydosh spun in tandem out of turn two battling in a tight pack of cars just outside the top-five for the second caution flag on lap-10. The restart was not kind to Jeff Rocco as he made heavy contact with the retaining wall exiting turn two while running second. Ted Christopher was collected and pitted for repairs, returning at the tail end of the field while Rocco’s night was over.

Only one more lap was completed before caution was back out on lap-11 as more mayhem broke out behind Puleo. Another bobble by Jackson out of turn two resulted in several cars making contact and Monahan again the victim, stopped on the track with a flat tire. Keith Rocco took the opportunity to head to the pits for attention to his machine during the yellow.

Craig Lutz took over at the front with a daring three-wide maneuver after racing went back to green. He looked inside Puleo down the back chute coming to lap-14 as Puleo fended off a challenge to his outside by Abele. Lutz cleared both exiting turn four to streak into the lead. He held the top spot through lap-22 when Puleo fought back and found room to his inside. Behind Puleo Todd Ceravolo eventually came away with second position in a battle that saw three cars tangle on lap-24. Abele and Lutz both tried racing under Brett Gonyaw in turn two, coming together to bring out the next caution flag and sending all three to the pit area for repair. The melee bumped James up to third position and into contention.

James was able to get ahead of Ceravolo on the ensuing restart, trailing Puleo when Jeffrey Gallup and Christopher wrecked in turn four battling for fourth on lap-25. Once in second, James used the next restart to stay outside of Puleo and take command on lap-27. James survived a final restart on lap-33, besting Ceravolo to race to the checkered flag. Ceravolo wound up second while Puleo ran up front all night, leading much of the race, to place third. Keith Rocco and Lutz both rebounded from their hurdles to round out the top-five.

Thomas won the 30-lap Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model race following a tumultuous pass for the lead on lap-27. Moltz took command at the front early before the only caution flag flew on lap-4 when Keith Rocco, Anthony Ryan Jr., Vin Esposito and Rich Duranti came together in turn two. Thomas lined up second for the restart but watched as Moltz again pulled ahead.

Thomas tried to stay in Moltz’s tire tracks as the two drifted away from a battle for third place over the next several laps. Jeff Smith held the spot but Jason Palmer, Rich Staskowski and Rocco were all jockeying for track position. Rocco came out with the position by lap-12, howevert Moltz and Thomas were a straightaway ahead as the race hit its second half.

With racing clean and green for the extended run Moltz’s car began showing signs of slowly fading away. Thomas slowly closed back in on Moltz, inching his way to the leader’s rear bumper by lap-24. Thomas bided his time and found room under Moltz coming out of turn four racing to lap-27. Moltz broke sideways and made contact with Thomas the entire length of the frontstretch into turn one before Thomas muscled the top spot away. Moltz was able to recover however Rocco was closing in fast from third. While Thomas was able to clear remaining lapped traffic to go on to the checkered flag, Rocco got by Moltz on the final lap to snatch second. The win was the 55th of Thomas’ Speedbowl career.

Waterman was a well-received first-time winner in the Street Stock division in a caution-free 25-lap event. A newcomer to the division, Waterman took the lead on lap-7 from Dan Darnstaedt. While Darnstaedt moved out to a quick early advantage, Waterman and Joe Arena moved to second and third and closed the gap back to the leader. When Waterman found room inside of Darnstaedt, Arena filled the gap to take second on lap-8. Behind them, Chris Meyer and Brandon Plemons filled the top-five while Josh Galvin and Corey Hutchings broke out of traffic trying to run down the top-five.

By lap-11 Meyer and Plemons cleared Darnstaedt with Arena the next target. Meyer challenged him for second position beginning on lap-13, however Arena battled hard and the two put on a great show until Meyer finally got past on lap-16. Galvin had caught the pack to make a three car battle for third among Arena, Plemons and himself while Waterman was looking great out front.

Meyer closed in on Waterman and pressured the young leader. Meyer looked high on multiple occasions, but Waterman was too quick and composed to lose focus. Meyer settled for second while Arena came out on top in the battle for third. Both Arena and Meyer congratulated and praised Waterman’s performance following the race.

The 25-lap Mini Stock feature saw the defending track and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division IV champion return to the winner’s circle for the first time in 2013. Cassidy looked strong early, moving up to second position after starting the race fourth in another green-to-checkered flag race. Bill Leonard ran the outside lane to take the lead from pole-sitter Doug Curry. Leonard had the lead to himself on lap-4 with Cassidy quickly moving to second. The two ran nose to tail as Garrett Denton moved outside of Curry in a great side-by-side battle for third.

By lap-13 Cassidy was looking for room to challenge leader Bill Leonard. Leonard kept the low groove as Cassidy went high. The two spent the next 10 laps door-to-door racing for the lead and ultimately the victory. Behind them Denton couldn’t clear Curry and the top four cars put on a show for the fans. Leonard held his lead until Cassidy finally inched forward to lead lap-17. Cassidy would not back down, riding the outside lane into sole possession of the lead on lap-23 after Leonard’s valiant fight caused him to slip ever so slightly in turn four. Cassidy slipped away over the final two laps to claim the win. Leonard finished in second while Curry spun on the final lap in his battle with Denton, allowing Denton to grab third at the finish line. The win was the 44th of Cassidy’s storied Mini Stock career.

The SK Light Modified division titlist the past two years, French rose through the top-five competitors to move behind leader Glenn Griswold. Griswold led from lap-1 when he took the spot after starting outside of the front row. Travis Jurcik spun between turns one and two from second position to bring the race under its first caution flag.

Griswold resumed his lead on the restart with Randy Churchill taking second. Corey Barry and French were locked in a battle for third with French coming away with the spot by lap-8. The second caution waved as Victoria Bergenty and Jurcik spun together in turn four on lap-9 to reset the field.

Griswold got the jump while French took advantage of the restart to keep Churchill in the outside lane. He was able to clear Churchill to move to second on lap-10 and the top three settled in line. French sized up Griswold looking to challenge for the win, trying to get a run to the inside on multiple occasions. Exiting turn two on lap-19 French had as good a shot as any and dived under Griswold into turn three. The two spent a half-lap even before French was able to pull away again off turn two on lap-20.

Once clear of Griswold, French went on to victory by five car lengths as the race remained under the green flag the rest of the way. Griswold finished in second while Churchill was a solid third. French has won the division championship the past two years.

The next NASCAR event at the track is next Saturday when 5/25 Mayhem takes over on Memorial Day Weekend. All five-divisions in action each go extra distance as five laps are added to each regular feature distance length. Another round of Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday and Sho & Go Friday precedes. Memorial Day Madness invades the Speedbowl next Sunday.

Taking down victories included Joey Ternullo of Middletown, CT in the INEX Legend Cars and Christian Eckes of Middletown, NY in the accompanying Bandolero race. Mike Trask of Plainfield scored a popular X-Car win and Mike Maskell of Quaker Hill took the Super-X Car feature. In the night’s Wacky Race, Chuck McDonald of Groton used an impressive showing to race to victory.

Ternullo was the fifth leader in the 20-lap INEX Legend Cars race by the time he reached the top spot in an ultra-competitive feature. As Ternullo slowly worked his way up from the ninth starting position, the lead position changed hands multiple times. John O’Sullivan Jr. bolted to the early lead, however he was chased down by Joey Ferrigno on lap-3. Ferrigno took over and held the top spot until Nick Sowa used the inside lane to get by him to show the way on lap-7. The first caution waved on lap-10 when David Johnson looped his car in turn four.

Sowa led after the restart but T.J. Thompson was on his rear bumper. Contact among the top two cars saw Thompson get into the turn three wall on lap-13, bringing out the second caution flag of the race with Sowa able to continue at the front after the melee.

Sowa showed the way until Angelo Belsito raced his way into contention looking to take his second consecutive win to start the Wednesday series season. Ternullo followed Belsito into second position looking to slow Belsito’s charge.

Ternullo was able to make a power move to the inside of Belsito on lap-17, finishing off the maneuver as the pair raced through turns three and four to the white flag. Belsito attempted to counter with a cross-over move, however Ternullo was too quick and slipped away. Over the final lap, Belsito was unable to mount a comeback and watched as Ternullo took the checkered flag, his first of the year. Belsito finished second while Sowa was able to hold on for third.

The 20-lap X-Car feature was a tale of two halves. Scott Limkemann jumped out ahead of the field in the early going as two and three wide racing by the field dominated the opening laps. Following the first caution flag, Limkemann had company at the front of the field. Randy Johnston and Trask moved into the top three positions behind the leader.

Trask darted outside Johnston for second on lap-9, taking the spot. He immediately went to work on Limkemann’s lead and used the inside groove to make his challenge. The pair battled for two laps before Trask got the better of Limkemann to lead lap-12. Once in the lead, Trask slowly stretched his lead to several car lengths. Trask’s path to victory had a final hurdle however, as lapped cars nearly flustered his momentum. Headed into turn three for the final time, three cars tangled just in front of the leader. Trask drifted high out of the racing groove to avoid contact, enabling Limkemann to make a final charge through the skirmish. Trask was able to drop back in the groove and hold back Limkemann to the finish line. Limkemann finished second and Mitch Bombard placed third.

Eckes won the 15-lap Bandolero feature by the slimmest of margins over Jacob Perry. Perry rallied in the outside lane following a caution on lap-10 to stay glued to Eckes as they raced door-to-door straight through the finish. Eckes held a small advantage at the white flag and held on to narrowly edge Perry at the stripe under the checkered flag. Perry’s had to settle for second while Anthony Marvin finished third. The race featured tight racing by the top pack of cars throughout.

Maskell led throughout the 20-lap Super X-Car feature. His biggest challenge came from three restarts, each time getting the better of defending division champion Jim Boyle. Boyle faded late in the race while Frank Alessio came on strong. He got to Maskell’s rear bumper on the final lap to make a bid for the win but was unable to find a way around. Maskell survived a final assault by Alessio in turns three and four to take the victory. John Yagmin finished third.

The Wacky Race featured the X-Cars compete in a hot dog eating race. McDonald made his pit stop to the Speedbowl infield early, downing two hot dogs before returning to the track ahead of his competition. He held off Brad Voglesong, who completed the event second.

The Speedbowl is back in action this Friday evening with the opening “Sho & Go at the ‘Bowl” of the season, followed by NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action on Saturday. More information on those events and the entire 2013 event schedule can be found online at Speedbowl.com.

Waterford, CT (May 11, 2013) – Waterford Speedbowl was forced to cancel its NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing program scheduled for Saturday, May 11 due to rain forecasted throughout the afternoon and evening.

Action will return to the shoreline oval next week on May 15 with Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday, the track’s popular mid-week series. Spectator drags and car cruise invade the shoreline oval on Friday May 17 for “Sho & Go at the ‘Bowl” featuring free grandstands admission. Next Saturday May 18 sees the return of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action on Scout Night.

Next week kicks off a busy stretch for the shoreline oval. The following week another round of Wednesday and Friday action sets up Memorial Day Weekend which includes the first ever 5/25 Mayhem on Saturday night plus the family fun of the annual Memorial Day Madness on Sunday evening.

5/25 Mayhem puts five divisions in action for extra-distance racing. Five laps will be added to each feature distance on the night, adding up to 25 extra laps of feature racing. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modifieds® will go 40-laps while the Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Models get 35-laps to do business. The Street Stocks and Mini Stocks are capable of astonishing races in their normal distance and will get 30-laps to strut their stuff while many Legend Cars competitors are excited about their 25-lapper on 5/25 Mayhem.

On Sunday, racing turns to into destruction at Memorial Day Madness. The always popular Demo Derby and wild Speedbowl Trailer Race headline the event, which also includes a 50-lap four-cylinder Enduro and a Ski Car race. More Speedbowl surprises are always in store. The night will be capped off with an aerial fireworks display to celebrate the holiday weekend.
